Ecotherapy

What is Ecotherapy? It is regular counselling – but outdoors, and in a way that suits you. This can be counselling while sitting in the garden, going or looking around the lake at Delamere Forest, on the Sandstone Trail, or somewhere special to you. My approach is to fit in with what makes you most comfortable, and which will allow you to get the most from your counselling sessions.

Delamere Forest - the path around the lake

This approach is great if you don’t like the idea of counselling indoors, or maybe you experience claustrophobia and would feel uncomfortable in a counselling room. The important thing is that you should feel comfortable in your therapy sessions – and for some clients that means getting outside.

There are lots of benefits to ecotherapy – getting in touch with the natural world, experiencing all of the different sights and smells, and for some clients it gives the chance to escape from the day-to-day and take stock both of where they are and where they want to go in the future. Being outside literally gives us a different perspective, and this can help to unlock feelings, or help us to express ourselves and work effectively on something that’s been on our mind. And being outside – even if it’s raining – is generally good for you!

Safety is the first concern – both for the client and the counsellor. I undertake a comprehensive risk assessment prior to working in any location to ensure that the session can be done safely and ethically, and in a way that meets my duty of care to you. Clients are responsible for consulting their medical advisors to check that it is safe to undertake the planned session. Together, we can always find a way.

If you’re thinking of ecotherapy but you need more information, or if there’s anything that you need to check, or if you have any questions as to whether this  would be suitable for you, give me a call on 07879 344133, or email simon@octopustherapy.co.uk
